Transport Refrigeration Across Cold-Chain Applications

Every refrigerated vehicle carries a different heat load, route profile and temperature requirement. The sections below set out how body volume, cargo type and duty cycle determine which transport refrigeration unit fits.

Refrigerated Vans

Application 01

Refrigerated Vans

Urban and last-mile distribution carries smaller volumes but far more door openings per route, which makes recovery time after each opening the limiting factor rather than steady-state capacity.

Van bodies typically require the lowest-capacity units in a range, with a compact condenser footprint. Closing the doors between drops and pre-cooling the body before loading matter more here than in any other application, because the ratio of door-open time to body volume is highest.

Refrigerated Trucks

Application 02

Refrigerated Trucks

Medium and heavy truck bodies carry larger loads over longer runs, where steady-state heat gain through the insulation and the cargo's own respiration become the dominant loads.

Selection here balances cooling capacity at the design ambient against the body volume served. The relevant capacity figure is the one published at the ambient your market actually operates in, not the headline number at a lower test condition.

Refrigerated Trailers

Application 03

Refrigerated Trailers

Trailer applications run the longest duty cycles and typically demand the largest cooling capacities in a transport refrigeration range.

For trailer work the operating question shifts to continuous running at sustained ambient, with the unit holding temperature across multi-day routes. Self-powered units carry their own engine and are independent of the towing vehicle's electrical system, which suits this duty.

Pharmaceutical Transport

Application 04

Pharmaceutical Transport

Pharmaceutical cold chain is defined by documentation and temperature stability rather than by cooling speed. A deviation that is not recorded is indistinguishable from one that did not happen.

The practical requirements are a stable control band, a verifiable record of the run, and a pre-cooled body before loading. Cargo must be loaded at its target temperature: a refrigeration unit holds temperature, it does not pull an over-temperature pharmaceutical load down to setpoint.

Food Transport

Application 05

Food Transport

Fresh and frozen food in the same operation usually means two temperature bands, and mixing them in one truck body is where most distribution cost is either saved or lost.

Multi-temperature units control two zones independently so chilled and frozen cargo can travel together without temperature interference. The alternative — splitting the load across two vehicles — doubles the trips for the same delivered volume.
